AGM 2016

22 February 2016

On Monday 22 February 2016, JWA’s annual general meeting took place.

The AGM allowed JWA to show results over a 16 month period, as the Charity’s year end changed to close on 31 July 2015. The 2014-15 annual review was distributed to all that attended and is available for download here.

Her Honour Judge Dawn Freedman, trustee of JWA since 2009, was the guest speaker, and formally retired at the AGM.

HH Dawn Freedman is a retired circuit judge, whose career on the bench spanned 27 years. Throughout her career, Dawn has contributed hugely to the Jewish community and has worked tirelessly to improve the position of women in need of legal support. Dawn has been chair of the Jewish Marriage Council, member of the council of London School of Jewish Studies, trustee of the Jewish Law Publication Fund, Judge of the Chief Rabbi’s awards and is currently Co-chair of Ealing Synagogue.

Dawn was a member of the Board of Deputies family law group, which was involved in drafting and obtaining the passage through both Houses of Parliament of the Divorce (Religious Marriages) Act and has been a Member of the Get and Agunah committee for the Chief Rabbi`s Review of Women in the Community. She drafted the amendment to the United Synagogue bye-laws giving powers to deal with husbands who refuse to give a Get. At Jewish Women’s Aid, Dawn enriched and strengthened the legal support we are able to offer our clients, as well as establishing an annual Legal Seminar for the organisation. Jewish Women’s Aid would like to thank her for all her hard work.

During her presentation, HH Dawn Freedman took the opportunity to reflect on where there have been changes in relation to domestic abuse over the last 50 years and specifically in relation to JWA during the 7 years whilst she has been a Trustee.
