CALL YOURSELF A MENSCH?
Our Call Yourself A Mensch Campaign is a unique campaign to
attract men, supported by the Prime Minister and the Gordon Brown.
This unique campaign invites men to take a stand against
domestic violence in the Jewish community and to support our
educational work in schools with young male teenagers. JWA wants
to stop the violence before it starts which is why our education
programmes in schools, aimed at different ages, are so important.
The Call Yourself A Mensch Campaign calls upon
men to sign up to a declaration deploring domestic violence and
reaffirming traditional Jewish teachings on the treatment of
women in marriage and the home. One in four women will experience
some form of domestic violence during their lifetime and the
Jewish community is no different.
An initiative of a group of male partners of JWA supporters,
the Call Yourself A Mensch Campaign launched
with a full-page advertisement in the Jewish Chronicle listing
over 120 founder signatories to the campaign and inviting other
men to join them. Signatories of the advertisement also include Gordon Brown MP and Prime Minister David
Cameron MP, as well as all the rabbinical heads of the major
synagogue movements.
JWA Campaign Chair Hilda Worth says, “The
Jewish community needs to wake up to the scale of domestic
violence and do more to help combat it. This is a unique and
hugely positive initiative where men can show their abhorrence
of domestic violence and support our educational work with
young men.”
The campaign was also be promoted through a series of events
with the business community where other men were invited to
sign up and sponsor the work of the charity.
