A superb evening at The Jewish Museum was held in support of Jewish Women’s Aid, raising almost £2700 for the charity. 70 JWA supporters saw a privately-curated showing of Roman Vishniac Rediscovered, a fantastic exhibition which was presented simultaneously between the Jewish Museum and the Photographers’ Gallery.

The evening started with Chanukah candle-lighting and communal singing of Maoz Tsur, with doughnuts and other delicious refreshments organised by our fantastic JWA volunteer Tracy Lee. Tracy is also a volunteer at the Jewish Museum, and this evening was her brainchild. One benefactor donated a copy of the fabulous exhibition book as the raffle prize. Exhibition curator Morgan Wandsworth-Boyle gave the group a fascinating talk about Vishniac and his work, including little-known biographical information and insights into the origins of his photographs.

JWA Chief Executive Naomi Dickson said:

“We have recently discovered the shocking statistic that Jewish women wait longer to get help than the national average. 11.5 years is too long to wait, and can be very dangerous. So it is even more important that 70 people come together at the moment in support of JWA. The more people who talk about it, the more likely that women will reach out as soon as they need us rather than waiting so long. We’re so grateful to everyone who came.”

One of the supporters who attended said:

“I had no idea that women were waiting so long before talking to anyone. It’s like it’s got to be kept a big secret. I can’t imagine what they’re going through. I’m really glad to support JWA’s work, I just hope it continues to help more women.”
