Jewish Women’s Aid is the only specialist charity in the UK working with Jewish women and their children affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence. We run a holistic and culturally sensitive service, offering advocacy and emotional support, counselling, group work, helplines, web chat and children’s therapy services. Our preventive educational work takes place in synagogues, schools, on campus and across Jewish community settings.

Domestic Abuse Practitioner / Independent Domestic Violence Advocate (IDVA)

The role
We are looking for a Domestic Abuse Practitioner/IDVA to join our casework team. Our domestic abuse service provides a vital lifeline to women experiencing all forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, sexual, economic, spiritual and technological abuse.

You will provide practical and emotional support through:

  • Risk and needs assessment
  • Safety planning and key work
  • Supporting access to counselling, legal advice and other services

You will play a key role in empowering women to rebuild their lives and move towards a safer future.

About you
You will be:

  • Experienced in working with vulnerable and high-risk women, particularly those affected by domestic abuse
  • Trauma-informed, empathetic and proactive
  • Confident managing complex caseloads
  • Knowledgeable about the gendered nature of domestic abuse and sexual violence
  • Familiar with, and sensitive to, the needs of the Jewish community
  • Comfortable using digital tools and systems

Development
If you are not already IDVA-qualified, you will be eligible to apply for SafeLives IDVA training after six months in post.

Initial 1-year fixed term contract. Extension of contract subject future funding

Full time – 35 hours per week
£31,000 (unqualified) / £32,000 (qualified IDVA)
Based in our North London Office

Volunteer Counsellor – London or Manchester (online role)

The volunteer counsellors will work online with 2–3 clients a week, use JWA’s database to upload notes and hold reviews with clients.

As a volunteer counsellor with Jewish Women’s Aid, you’ll support survivors of domestic abuse to heal and rebuild their futures. You’ll be part of a warm, supportive team where your skills will grow through regular CPD and supervision, while gaining specialist experience in the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) sector.

What difference you will make

You will support Jewish women survivors of domestic abuse to move forward with their lives and heal from traumatic experiences. Through counselling, women will be able to regain control, rediscover their inner strength and make their own choices.

By joining our team, you will also play a vital role in tackling violence against women and girls (VAWG), helping to reduce isolation and increase safety, confidence, and wellbeing.

What additional skills or experience you should have

We are looking for compassionate, non-judgemental and motivated individuals who are passionate about supporting survivors.

You should have:

  • A counselling qualification at minimum diploma level (BACP, BPC, UKCP or similar accredited).
  • Experience of working with vulnerable clients, ideally women.
  • An understanding of domestic abuse dynamics.
  • Knowledge of the Jewish community.
  • Commitment to a minimum of 2 years volunteering.

What training we will provide for you

All volunteers attend an induction to JWA and to the counselling service.
We provide regular CPD training every 3–4 months to help you deepen your expertise in the VAWG sector.
