Counselling Service

Counselling is a talking therapy, based on regular weekly sessions with a counsellor, in a safe and confidential space. We aim is to provide those affected by domestic abuse or sexual violence with the opportunity to work towards living in a way that is more satisfying and meaningful.

Being client-led, it will give you the opportunity to explore your options in your own way.

Why have counselling?

Many women who are being controlled or abused in an intimate relationship feel confused or unsure about what is really going on. Counselling can help you clarify what is (or was) happening, validate your experiences in a safe environment, and help you find ways of coping.

It can help you move forward with your life, regain your power to make choices, and enable you to start to take back the control that others may have tried to take from you.

What does the service provide?

  • We offer weekly one-to-one sessions in a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space. This may be face-to-face or over the phone
  • You will be given 16 weeks of person-centred counselling, which can be extended if you and your counsellor feel it is beneficial to do so
  • It’s non-judgemental, client-led support, available regardless of whether you choose to stay in or leave your relationship
  • We help you deal with domestic abuse or sexual violence, whether you are currently experiencing it or have experienced it in the past

We work within a safeguarding framework, which means it’s confidential, but must always ensure that you and your children are safe. We might sometimes have to involve external agencies, which we’ll discuss with you.

Who are the counsellors?

Our counsellors are fully-qualified, with a strong understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse and sexual violence and its impact on women, and the specific issues a client faces as a Jewish woman.

In addition, we have a few final-year trainee counsellors who are closely supervised and additionally supported by our Therapeutic Services Manager.

All our counsellors work to a recognised professional code of conduct and ethics, provide a highly confidential service and receive regular supervision and training.

Children’s Therapy

Our Children and Young Person’s Therapy Service is for children and young people aged 4 to 18 who have lived with domestic abuse, but don’t currently live with the perpetrator.

The service aims to help them process their emotions and experiences, and move on with their lives in a positive way.
